Superwoman needs a Superman

I make no bones about it, I don't even pretend to be anything other than what I am.
I'm a big girl.
I've posted my pics a couple of times and it's not hard to see.
I own my weight and as I've said before, I looooooooove my shape.

Do you see those hips?

But when it comes to men, I happen to be attracted to tall, husky, robust men. I'm an equal opportunity dater and personality trumps looks anyday but my eyes glaze over significantly and my heart thumps fervently over a well built man.
I suppose I simply want to feel like the man in my life can protect me. And that really has nothing to do with size or shape but it has everything to do with his frame of mind.

Let's just say that my door bells rings in the middle of the night. My man is over at my place. He looks at me as if to say, "Who's at your door?". I look back as if to say, "T'hell if I know, it's 2:00 in the d*mn morning!". Why should I be the one to go to the door to see who's there while my man, who is well and able-bodied, sleeps comfortably in my bed? Now suppose it's some crazy dude at my door? Some maniac coming to attack? Who better to handle some mess in the middle of the night than a big ole strong and burly man?!?!

No bruh, I a need Melvin from "Baby Boy" or a Mann from "Rosewood"! Figuratively and/or literally. I need a take charge kind of a man who can allow this superwoman to take off her cape and just be a lady, a damsel in distress.

I don't need Neyo writing no songs for me. Alicia Keys, though I like her music, I don't care to hear another song about another independent superwoman. I think those songs affect men in all of the wrong ways because when I need some security and protection, that a true man should supply, in no way do I want to positive self-talk myself into handling some crazy behind situation that is beyond my grip.

This Superwoman needs a Superman - I should have added that to my love list.
In every sense, I will be the Lois to his Clark.

Now I know nobody wants to get hurt and I'm not saying that my man should engage in brawls or have weapons stashed on his person. I'm not saying that a man should never show emotion or cry or express himself. I'm definitely not talking a man being overly tough or thuggish, brutish.

But I am saying... Leave out machismo. A man should be responsible and speak up for his lady, defend his lady - not if he has to but because he has to.

Why Me?

"If I were to say, ''God, why me?'' about the bad things, then I should have said, ''God, why me?'' about the good things that happened in my life." ~Arthur Ashe

The question, Why Me?, is usually asked when things go wrong. Someone has lost a job, or a loved one, you stump your toe or some crazy crap just keeps happening and you can't help but question...

Why Me?

You feel singled out. Punished. God doesn't love you. NO ONE loves you. Things have occurred, beyond your reason, beyond your control and we ask God and everyone around us to explain...

Why Me?

Lately I've been asking the very question but for different reasons... I couldn't be happier in my life. I mean sure it's the holidays and I've been spending lots and lots of time alone and my money is low but my finances are coming together quite nicely.
I cannot stand the fact that I have to work, everyday at that, and I'm really not liking my boss at all but life outside of this building is great.
I have wonderful friendships and a friendship that only a love list can inspire.

Yet I question Why Me? Why do I feel so lovely and these lovely things keep happening to me? Love keeps flowing in and through my life... Why Me?

I think of "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gillman. I think of that woman who lived in a child-like state, trapped and confined, living in a horrible fantasy world. I think of how her life was unfulfilled and hidden from her husband and even from herself. I think of how she stripped the yellow wallpaper from the wall in order to free the woman she imagined who lived in the wallpaper, thus freeing herself...

The other day I wrote Why Me? down in my journal. I stared at it for about 5 minutes when another question popped in my head that made me scratch the mess out of that question and write.

Why NOT Me?!!!

Am I not one of the most magnificent people I know?!!! Haven't I tried to be good to people? Don't I deserve some happiness? Is everyone else I know supposed to reap the rewards of life and I'm to sit by the sidelines cheering them on? Or am I supposed to adorn myself and dance in the very same parade? Oh, yes the hell I am!

I no longer want to be a "Wallpaper Woman", crawling around in a prison behind the walls believing that good things come to others but passes me right on by. Instead I participate in and anticipate my blessings by raising my hands high with expectation and no doubt, ready to grasp my blessings, hold them close to my heart with a heartfelt Thank You on my lips.

More importantly, never ever do I want to take my blessings for granted. If God sees fit to bless me who am I to question it. So whatever comes my way... reason, season, lifetime, the good and the not so good, I count it all joy!

He Loves Me

I have an especially hard time with Love.
I've been hurt in the name of love. I remember one of my exes grabbed me and left the print of his hand around my wrist as he told me that he loved me.
But I also know that feeling that you just want to bottle up and carry it around in your pocket for safe keeping. That knowing feeling that plants itself in your soul. The feeling I have and have shared with my parents and the rest of my family. The most confusing and indescribable of sensations when it comes to relationships... LOVE.
I still struggle with it. I know how to love. I have a lot of love to give and I freely give it. The thing is I don't know how to receive it. I push love away. I beat the mess out of love. I ask love to reveal itself, prove itself, and gone on by itself. I've even prayed for love and when it was presented to me, I laughed at it and said it wasn't enough. Yeah sometimes I'm psychotic when it comes to love.

This weekend I was home and cleaning and decided to throw on my Who Is Jill Scott? cd. When this came out in 2001, I just knew that the emerging neo-soul sound was created with my ears in mind and when I heard track 7, I knew I wanted the same kind of love that Jill sang about when she sang...

You love me especially different every time
You keep me on my feet happily excited
By your cologne, your hands, your smile, your intelligence
You woo me, you court me, you tease me, you please me
You school me, give me some things to think about
Ignite me, you invite me, you co-write me, you love me, you like me
You incite me to chorus.....

Now I'm thinking... what if Lyzel told her that he loved her like that and like me she was struggling to believe it so she penned it, affirmatively she sang it and belted the hell out of it recording and singing it live, and that love became a reality? What is she didn't write it at all? What if Lyzel wrote it for her to sing and affirm for herself? What if like me she didn't believe true love between two people could really exist and this was her way of slamming her negative thoughts and moving forward in her positive thinking.

I was thinking of my guy and how I've been pushing his love away. In one of his messages he texted me that the love he gives is a reflection of the love I give to him. Now as good as that love is, as wonderful as it feels, how very beautiful it is -- why am I trying so hard to push it away?

You're different and special
You're different and special in every way imaginable
You love me from my hair follicles to my toenails
You got me feeling like the breeze, easy and free and lovely and new
Oh when you touch me I just can't control it
When you touch me, I just can't hold it
The emotion inside of me, I can feel it
The love I'm feeling, I prayed for. I took my time and created my Love List and I believe that this is the fruition. This morning as I walked with an extra pep in my step, feeling like the breeze, easy and free and lovely and new as I arrived to work... when I heard the message he left as he sang this on my voicemail, I thanked God for His blessing. This type of love doesn't happen everyday and because I know that not only do I want love but I need it, I slowly and surely say goodnight to my struggle and simply relent...

... Love List Thursdays

My guy and I were having our customary Monday morning argument on Tuesday morning (Labor Day threw us off). I don't like to argue. At all. I prefer healthy conversations, voicing opinions, agreeing to disagree but I don't like arguing.

I admit the argument was stupid. It went from one little thing to something big. After he left me to run off to work, I had a moment to think and realize that the argument didn't even have to take place. I could have cut the whole thing short myself by just saying one word. Sorry.

I admit that I am not a sorry sayer. It's not that I feel exempt from all wrong doing or Ms. Perfect as he calls me. I just feel that a "sorry" doesn't always cut it. For instance, when people say "I'm sorry that you feel that way" - that's not even a band aid for the damage. That's so weak that it doesn't even make sense to say. Yet I know that saying sorry sometimes encourages healing and holds one accountable to his or her actions.

So on Tuesday when I put butter on his toast not knowing he didn't want butter, he expected a sorry but instead I said, "How did I know you didn't want butter on your toast! It's toast! You always put butter on your toast. Oh well, I bet it's gonna taste really good with butter on there". I called him later to apologize even though I didn't feel an apology was necessary. It was a simple mistake and though it was not a heartfelt apology, just the fact that I extended the words to him was the balm that was needed to ease the tension between us.

That's not the best way apologize. In fact it was just as weak as his. I wouldn't suggest anyone say sorry just cause. I'm ashamed to say that I said it just to keep peace...

But it worked...

I said sorry because I know that that 5 letter word if gone unsaid can and probably will lead to resentment in the future. I forget to check myself on the little things and I was determined for us to not have a messed up day just because I wouldn't humble myself over an apology... even if it was over buttered toast.

Love Itself..... Love List Thursdays

"Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident." - Captain Corelli's Mandolin. "Love is the beauty of the soul."--St. Augustine

The other day my mother bumped into one of her old girlfriends and my old baby sitter, V. She told V I was still living in her old apartment and she could come see me whenever she felt like... if I was home. V is like a mother/aunt to me, since she baby sat me for about 5 years. I love V, I mean really and I can't stress it enough. She's close enough to me like a mother, but also like a friend. She was the first I told when I first experienced intercourse. I ran to her when I was 18 and helplessly in love and my mother couldn't understand why I was possessed. V is one of the most loving and caring women in my life.

She has always been sensual and vivacious. When my mom used to host house parties, V was the life of the party with her signature black tube dresses and her long, thick, wavy hair combed to one side, falling over her left shoulder.

V’s favorite color was black. Everything in her house... the tile on the floor, curtains, table, and all of her furniture & appliances was black. At Christmas, though, she always had a silver tree. One year she decided to paint a big black bold V on her wall.

I remember raiding V’s closet for my favorite pair of shoes that belonged to her. She had these black kitten heels with feathers across the toes that I loved to slip on my feet and parade around her house, although they were too big for me.

V used to smoke More cigarettes with the brown paper, which were long and elegant – which probably lead me to smoking Clove cigarettes because of the dark paper and the elegant look to them but it was also the clove smell appealed to me.

My mother told me once that V was every man’s dream. She explained that V was the type of woman who woke up earlier than her man, cooked his breakfast, ironed his clothes, ran his bath, put his slippers right by his side of the bed and would even put his toothpaste on his toothbrush. I tried that once and all that catering and pampering gets tired real quick.

Last week Thursday, shortly after coming home from work, I heard V in the hallway of my building before she even rang my bell, “K, are you in there with those big pretty legs?”. (For the record, my legs are huge, not big) I opened my door and there was V, 61 years old and still as beautiful as she was 30 years ago when I first met her. Her hair, though still long and wavy has thinned and grayed with age. She’s still curvy and she still has a smile like sunshine. Accompanying V was her fiancĂ©, 46 year-old Romeo.

At 61, V has never been married though she has her share of past romances. I invited V and her fiancé in and pretended to grill him to make sure he was really into my auntie and not just stringing her along. He left shortly after meeting to wait in his car and me and V had a little chit chat about love.

She explained to me how she met Romeo also known as Mega Man (a nickname she gave him and I see she is still every man’s dream, making this man feel Mega). She asked me about getting married and I danced around the issue until she interrupted me and said...
"K, make sure you are equally yoked with your man. Sure it’s good if you both have the same beliefs in a higher power but even if you don’t make sure you have the same beliefs in a good life, finances, physical health, family, respect and love. Remember marriage is forever so take all the time you need."

At one point my family constantly got on me about getting married before I got too old and I told V about my father’s comment in particular. He told me to get married, if it doesn’t work, then get divorced – as if it’s that simple. She laughed then and told me that my father was just joking but this time V said, "and don’t listen to your father either, marriage is simple and yet not so simple. It’s worth it if you are committed to the right person."

Finally I asked V, who has had her share of heartbreak, why isn’t she bitter. She told me plainly and yet I’m paraphrasing a little, "K, I love love. I love all it contains, the feelings, the smell of it, the joy it brings. Love is why I exist. Love is who I am. I can’t help but love, fall in love, and try love again and again and again. Love wakes me up each morning, tucks me in at night. Love is like the sun rays upon my skin and it's in everything I do - the food I cook, the way I walk and talk. I believe in love. I just can't help myself."

Life Lessons I Wish I Learned From My Daddy

My daddy was the biggest man in my life for the longest of time. He has this big voice, big laugh and even now he's still kinda tall. When I was younger he'd pick me up and place me on his shoulders like the time we went to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. My father worked evenings and nights but he was the one who walked me to school every morning. My father gave me an allowance every week, which I was to save, and then he'd give me spending money. When my daddy realized how I loved chocolate, he would keep a stash in his night table drawer to settle my Friday night munchies. He could have waited to give me treats when he came in at 12:35 AM but knew I'd be in bed, fast asleep, by the time Arsenio went off.

Yet when it came to matters of the heart, there was a void. My father was an excellent provider. Whatever we needed and a lot of whatever we wanted, he supplied. When I was 18, my mother was afraid that I was going to elope with my boyfriend. Me and my boyfriend talked about it, I often dreamt about it - buying bridal magazines and fantasizing about my dream wedding. My mom begged and cried for my father to talk to me. We had a very simple conversation. Though I can't remember verbatim, it went a little sumthin' like this :

Daddy: Your mother tells me you have a boyfriend.
Me: Yes Daddy, I do. I would like for you to meet him some day.
Daddy: Ok darlin'. Your mother is afraid because you're spending too much time with him. She feels like you're disrespecting her. You're not going to run off and marry him, are you?
Me: (Sucking my teeth) Mommy really doesn't understand me. No Daddy I am not going to run off and marry him.
Daddy: I told her that I knew my child. I told your mother not to worry.

Now I can see how my mother probably wanted him to say and do more. My parents never complimented their children on their physical appearances. My mother says that she felt that complimenting us would go to our heads. Yet after heartaches and heartbreaks.... after years of feeling unpretty.... learning life lessons the hard way... I wish there were things that my daddy told and taught me...

* I wish my father told me over and over again that I was beautiful, significant, special, talented, exceptional, intelligent, awesome, brilliant, confident, phenomenal – that he was proud of me

* I wish my father told me to never settle for less than what I deserve

* I wish my father told me that a boy or a man does not give anything to a woman unless he expects something in return.

* I wish my father told me that if a man wants you, he’ll wait for you… I wish he taught me to value my body and the value in waiting for the right man.

* I wish my father told me that it was okay to feel fearful, hurt or rejected because something or someone better is to come. I wish he wiped my heartbroken tears.

* I wish my father told me to never act less than who I am.

* I wish my father taught me how to spot a good man and how to know when I’m getting played.

* I wish my father taught me that abuse is not the norm and I should never allow a man to put his hands on me.

* I wish my father taught me how a woman is supposed to be treated.

However I am grateful for lessons my father did teach me. My father insisted that I get my education and not just good but great grades. My father taught me how to be frugal and to save a part of my salary every pay day. I do not blame my father for the lessons he never taught me. I know he just didn’t know what to say or how to say them. He loved me the best way he knew how.

I am grateful for my spiritual father, God the Father, for loving and blessing his girl/woman child. God has truly filled the gaps in my life that neither my father nor any other man has ever been able to fill. I think John 4: 1-26 when Jesus met the woman at the well and how Jesus told her that he could provide water where she would never thirst again. The woman came to the well with an empty pot and after she spoke with Jesus, she left her pot right there. She no longer needed it. That’s what God has done for me. He has satisfied my thirsts for things that never satisfied me anyway – I call them false fillers. He loves me so much that I don’t bring emptiness to any relationship. I am so full of love, I am overflowing with it and have so much to share.

I am grateful for JT, my on the job hunny, for constantly complimenting me, for being my friend, for schooling me on dudes and the bull they try and sometimes succeed in pulling. I love JT because he values women - his mother, his sister, his ex-wife, his daughter. If you act like a ho, he treats you like a ho but when you act like a lady, he metaphorically and sometimes literally kisses your hands and your feet.

I am grateful for Rone, a past love, for telling me that if a man moves me out of my father’s home, he better be able to provide for me the same or provide better amenities than my father has. While we dated, I never paid for one date, he always paid it all. He bought food for my home. He picked me up from work, church and grad school. He gave me space to hang out with my girlfriends and he would often treat me and my girls when we went out. He was good to my mother and cool with my father.

I am grateful for FP, another on-the-job hunny and his old fashioned ways. For always walking on the “outside”, for opening doors and for knowing the value of good chocolate.

And I am grateful for my guy, MB. I knew MB for years before we became involved but on the night we began he told me how precious I was inside and out. He told me to value my body and to not give it away. I thank him for loving every dimple, roll, curve - every portion of my body. He still loves me and desires me physically. MB is my closest friend, my confidante and my protector. He still looks at me in a lusty kind of way when he thinks I’m not looking… well that is when he looks at me.

I am grateful for my exes, for teaching me lessons that I never want to experience again.

Lessons I'm Learning... Love List Thursdays

I’m learning that trusting in relationships is so complicated. I have always demanded trust. Complete and total trust - I won’t settle for anything less! I want to fully trust a person with my heart, my feelings, my love and I want that trust reciprocated.

But I know that I must be realistic. I know that someone is going to do and say things that hurt me at some time. I can pray it won’t happen, hope it won’t happen, will it to never happen, but the reality is it is inevitable.

I remember a time when I trusted fully. It was a long, long time ago but I used to trust 100% until a person wronged me. Then the brokenness created would chip away at the trust. Oh but now… everybody starts off with ZERO and trust is earned. I learned that trust should only be given to someone who is worthy.

Worthiness… that’s the key.

Trusting is never easy. It is not easy to accept that a person may hurt you. It is downright hard to accept that the person you love DID hurt you, or is hurting you - possibly damaging the relationship that took years to build, yet you keep your love open and allow yourself room and reasoning to resolve whatever conflict exists so that you may get over hurdles and continue to grow and nurture your love.

I’ve been hurt… plenty. I’ve been in relationships where trust was destroyed and completely died. Yet in my current relationship, I’m experiencing some things… learning some lessons, where in the past I would have called it quits and forgotten that the relationship had any weight to it at all. I’m learning that even though I’m a perfectionist, I’m not perfect and even though I want my mate to be perfect in every sense of the definition, that’s not likely to eeeeven happen. I know it’s crazy and truthfully I don’t really expect perfection. But I do expect openness… openness to communicate – fully, honestly (even if it hurts), openness to resolving conflicts and agreeing to disagree - if need be, openness to allow him to be who he is and the same with me… I continue with the Love List…

81. Makes our relationship a priority over the little things that could possibly break down an otherwise strong and maturing relationship
82. Knows that he is accountable for every action and deed he commits
83. Respects my need for personal space, and respects my thoughts, opinions and property by not snooping
84. Trusts me and is secure enough to allow me to have and begin friendships with whomever I want
85. Knows that he’s not my
end all or my be all and he’s completely fine with that

True Love... Love List Thursdays

TRUE LOVE NEVER DIES
Effie Waller Smith

I loved you, dear, when first we met,
I loved you then, I love you yet,
But why I do not know.

We met, we parted, that was all,

On a sunny, pleasant day,
When the leaves were stripped last Fall,
Of all their colors gay.

We met as only strangers do,
With simple courtesy;
I showed no signs that I loved you,
You none that you loved me.

And yet I love you, I confess
I love you, dear, and well,
With such a love I can't express,
Nor half begin to tell.

Some say that love if cherished not
Will fade away and die.
Ah, one we love can't be forgot,
True love can never die.

Love Addiction... Love List Thursdays

I remember the 80s hit by Robert Palmer "Addicted to Love". I loved the video with the "matching" women in black dresses, hair pulled back tight in a bun and those redder than red lips. But the lyrics...

“Your lights are on, but you’re not home
Your mind is not your own
Your heart sweats, your body shakes
Another kiss is what it takes
You can’t sleep, you can’t eat
Threes no doubt, you’re in deep
Your throat is tight, you can’t breathe
Another kiss is all you need”

I told you the story a few months back about my friend who was in a relationship with Jay-Z in my
Untitled post. Everyday she spoke to him, she would recall conversations, tell me what advice Jay had for her… this is a classic love addiction. The truth is that my friend was very lonely. She was approaching 30 at the time, she was single, no children and she deeply desired a connection to someone. For her it was Vibe magazine shots of Jay and his music. Sometimes it can be a real person.

“You see the signs, but you can’t read
You’re runnin at a different speed
You heart beats in double time
Another kiss and you’ll be mine, a one track mind
You can’t be saved
Oblivion is all you crave”

When I told my friend’s story, I also stated that I was in love with an imaginary lover. Someone who occupied bedroom space, mental space but little to nothing else. This was not what I wanted for myself and I ended the relationship.

There is a support group for love addicts and they have a website (I included it below). When I visited the site I was interested in seeing if I truly was a love addict or just making bad decisions. Of the 40 questions presented, I have to admit that I answered yes, honestly, to a bunch of them. I’m not ashamed of it! I make mistakes! Sometimes I think with my emotions and not with my mind. However I don’t consider what I’ve felt or experienced to be an addiction.

*I know I’ve been so caught up, so into someone that if I received a late night phone call intended for one thing only, I’d jump quickly into a pair of jeans, a T-shirt, the sexy bra & panty set I bought for such occasions and some flip flops and high tail it over to his spot or slip out of bed, into the shower, shaving my legs and arm pits, combing out my doobie and slipping on some lingerie and high heels awaiting his arrival.
For some that just plain ole horniness and lust. For some it can be an addiction.

*I know there was a time or 2 that I dialed a number repeatedly because I knew he was home, either alone and not answering my calls or with someone else. Okay – yeah – maybe that was addiction.

*I know I have fantasized about a certain someone and what all we could have been if only we stayed together.

*I know I love romance and sentiments and I’ve given it some intense thought.

There are all kinds of love addicts. I won’t get into them much but the link to Love Addicts Anonymous is
http://loveaddicts.org/.

Love is sometimes crazy. Sometimes love hurts. Love can feel overwhelmingly good and at times it can be the most serene sensation. I love LOVE. I’m never going to end my quest for it. I have had some exceptional love moments, love sessions, love affairs that I will never regret but what I’ve learned is that healthy love begins with me. I can’t find it in anyone else no matter how good they deliver. I don’t have to seek it in the imaginary because it’s real to me, it resides deep inside of me, I exude it, I demand it, and I claim it. I have so much love that I freely give it…

K's Love List

71. Knows to love healthy and loves me strong
72. Doesn't hold grudges (I borrowed this from Kiaya, another Love Lister)
73. Very slow to judge others
74. Blesses each meal
75. Has a long memory and recalls even the smallest memories that we share.

The Golden Rule: Reciprocity… Love List Thursdays

“My great hope is to laugh as much as I cry; to get my work done and try to love somebody and have the courage to accept the love in return.” ~Maya Angelou

I believe that all of my life I have been a giver and therefore I am a better giver than I am a receiver. Often when someone gives back to me, I feel guilty. I do not know why and I am still trying to understand it...

In the West Indian culture, it is common when visiting someone’s home that you always bring something and you leave with something. At least that’s with the older generation and I know it’s not exclusive to just the WI culture. The other day I was visiting my dad and I brought him my old cell phones for him to take back on his visit home. One is for my niece and the other is for her cousin. I also brought him a straw hat. In turn I went home with a bag of fruit and a T-shirt. This has to be the first time that I didn't feel so guilty afterwards, however it's the give and take principle that I'm trying to emphasize.

The same is true in love. Nowadays everyone seems to be so selfish. They want love and they want to have it their way. Customized Love. Greedy and want it all kinda love. Some people are not “courageous” enough to love and give their all and/or they won’t allow people to love them in return. Because they think that by doing so, they will only get hurt. We say we want someone to love us and then find reasons and actions to push them straight out of our lives.

The truth is no one enjoys loving and not being loved in return. The essence of love is that it is given, treasured and then returned. Another truth is reciprocity is no guarantee. You can love someone with the best that you have, fervently, only for it to be ill received or ignored. You cannot make someone love you if they don’t. As wonderful as love feels, it hurts like hell when it turns bad.

If you have found that one or if you are in pursuit, the golden rule is reciprocity… giving and receiving mutually. Love is just a feeling. If you don’t feel it, you cannot fake it. Yet if you do feel it you owe it to yourself and the one you love to allow the power of love to work.

Love of My Own… Love List Thursdays

I remember a time in my life when I desperately wanted a man. With everything in me I was on the prowl. I went clubbing with my friends, hanging out in after work spots, attending mixers and what I noticed is that I kept attracting men who were already attached. I knew that there was something in the energy that I exuded but I didn’t know just what it was.

Around this time my girlfriend KC had just hooked up with her man and all she talked about was this Montell Jordan look-alike. I was heat-ed and jealous and I wouldn’t talk to KC for about a year. First off, all she talked about was how fine he was. Secondly he appeared to be the most stable and responsible brother and I wanted someone in my life, just like him. It took my sisterfriend DC sitting me down and explaining that he really didn’t look like Montell Jordan, which actually lifted my jealousy a lot. LOL

What I came to find was that I was always going to attract a man who was married or attached to someone else if I wanted what someone else had. My AHA moment! As DC’s Jamaican mum would say “That’s heavy stuff”. In order for me to attract a man for me, I would have to do some soul searching and determine the qualities I desired in a prospective partner.

I do not talk about my relationship much… and if my girlfriend/co-worker/therapist/play cousin CB reads this, she will definitely beg to differ. But I don’t blog about my relationship or I may but I mask it up when I do… My relationship is very fragile and has been for a while and I try to keep our matters contained. I won’t get into details but I will say this…

It’s not easy learning and loving someone especially when it seems like you’re riding on the worst emotional roller coaster of your life. However the love we share, that was developed from day one, I prayed for and found. We cultivate it and our love resounds between us two, not us three, definitely not us four – just us two. It took me years and lifetimes, kissing frogs and falling fervently on my knees before this love of my own came along. It’s not like KC’s love (and I thank God for that because Montell Jordan’s not twin has turned out to be a heart breaker). My love compares to no one else’s and that makes it imperfect perfection.

Think Twice... Love List Thursdays

I was inspired to write this post by a post written by Ticia entitled What If…

In 2002 I received an email from one of my ex-boyfriends. I was apprehensive about communicating with him again. In a way I wanted to know how he was doing. While at the same time he was an ex and once I make up my mind to end an involvement, I normally do not go back. In this case, the idea of even considering going back frightened me.

I was young when I met this ex-boyfriend. I have always been gullible and through life experiences and discernment I have learned not to trust so easily. Yet I trusted him and I fell in love with him almost immediately.

While we dated he was physically and verbally abusive. He cheated on me and all the while we dated my self-esteem diminished. I was never one of those women who thought that if a man put his hands on you, he loves you. I knew he could not possibly love me but I stayed with him because I wanted him to stop hurting me and to love me as I deserved.

I won’t tell you that I was a victim because if he lifted his hand to me, I lifted mine right back though I’m sure I’m the only one who still carries the scars and memories of our fights. Through it all, I deeply desired to hurt him back for all of the bad he did to me. When an opportunity presented itself for me to hurt him, I jumped at it. He was destroyed by what I did to him and I was not happy with myself at all. I learned that healing will never come through revenge.

Late one night in 2002 he called my home. I remember lying in bed when the phone rang and after we exchanged greetings, he told me he called me just to say the he was sorry. He knew that I had my heart broken plenty since our relationship ended and he thought that he was to blame for what happened to me so he apologized to me for blatantly cheating on me and lying about it. He apologized for beating me unconscious and pushing me down a flight of stairs. He apologized for hurting me and my family and he told me that he desired to get back with me.

I considered getting back with him, starting over. By letting him in and talking to him, my old ways were upon me. But I was older and wiser too. Something told me to ask him one pertinent question and that was “If you lose your head and get angry about anything, will you put your hands on me again?” and he honestly answered me and told me that he couldn’t say no. That was all I needed to know and even though he came back apologetic, which I accepted, I knew that my past should remain behind me.

A lot of women don’t receive “the apology” when we’ve been hurt by men. I was happy to hear it, I needed to hear it but I acquired strength and self-love through the years and I knew I didn’t want nor need him intimately in my life.

Mirror Mirror... Love List Thursdays

The Physical

We women are always quick to say what we want to attract in the opposite sex but we don't necessarily live up to our own standards. We may like and adore the greatest of qualities in others but lack those very same qualities. We question why we attract a certain type of individual when we really desire the creme de la creme, superstar quality, wealthy and brilliant.

In creating my Love List, I purposely don't list qualities of a man who has anything that I don't. I spend a lot of time dating me, getting to know me and I know me very well. I can't ask anyone to offer anything that I don't possess. I can't ask for a Will Smith lookalike if I don't look like Jada Pinkett-Smith. I can't ask for anyone to openly and honestly communicate with me if I'm not a good communicator. And I can't ask for someone with huge Trump pockets when I'm a struggling blue collar woman. I know the adage says that opposites attract but the truth is Like Attracts Like.

I'm not saying that we must lower our standards but we must be real, taking a good look in the mirror and seeing ourselves - perfections and imperfections. If you don't like what you see when you're walking past the mirror, perhaps it's time to work on the physical, head to the gym or walk a few laps around the track. Perhaps it's time to head to the salon or the barber shop for a new do, or splurge a little on some new clothes and shoes. Afterall, if you don't like what you see in the mirror, chances are, nobody else will either. Upgrade yourself.

The Mental/Emotional

You know I love me some Erykah Badu and she hit it right on the head with...

"Bag lady you gone miss your bus / You can't hurry up / Cause you got too much stuff / When they see you comin' / Niggas take off runnin' / From you it's true / oh yes they do"

I won't claim to be free of baggage and all negative energy because I'm not and given any day or situation, something from my past, unresolved, may rise up and attack but if I want or if anyone wants to find and keep some love it's about fixing the brokenness. For me... With God all things are possible but everyone may not believe. So whatever must be done to heal the old wounds, forgive offenders, release negative attitudes, clear the clutter, let go of the baggage and "Pack Light", it's best to get to it. Self help books, hypnosis, therapy, chanting, yoga and I'm sure there are many other methods... holding in the anger and issues is a surefire route to Misery and Singledom.

I have a girlfriend with a Deelishis bootie who can't keep a man. She also has a beautiful face so that's not it either. She has some serious issues though. She's judgmental. She thinks that everyone excluding herself is ugly. I've tried talking to her and now I just pray for her. Her really good friends are just like her... but all of them are single. Nuff said.

Be Ready

In this day and age when everything we want and desire is available and attainable, the same goes for relationships. Some woman is out there right now, reading her Iyanla Vanzant books, she's in the gym sweating it out, she's got that weave or that short cut working, her clothes are tight and her attitude is right, she's got her own car, her own home or apartment - She's Ready. When or if Mr. Right comes along, he's going to find her balanced, loving and ready. She's done all her work to be a good mate. She's not waiting for Mr. Right to come along so she can prepare herself, get herself together and hope he'll be patient. She's done the behind the scenes labor and it's simply because she loves herself enough to put in the work. Meeting a potential mate, that's a bonus! How 'bout that?!

"Feels so good, when you're doing all the things that you want to do
Get the best out of life, treat yourself to something new
Keep your head up high
In yourself, believe in you, believe in me
Having a really good time, I'm not complaining
And I'm a still wear a smile if it raining
I got to enjoy myself regardless
I appreciate life, I'm so glad I got mine"
--Mary J. Blige "Just Fine"

K's Love List

Investing... Love List Thursdays

"Oh, you look good to me.... Your silky words are sweet.... But your pockets sure look empty"

I was recently talking to my father and as always he talks about being married to my mother and what occurred between them that prevents them from living under the same roof (they have been married for almost 33 years and separated for half that time). He usually focuses on the negative things but in this conversation he seemed a little upbeat when he spoke about their finances.

My father was the bread winner and he paid the rent, half of the Con Ed, the life insurance and bought the food. My mother paid the phone bill, half of the Con Ed and bought clothes for both me and my brother. Whatever was left over was split between their joint bank accounts and then on themselves. My father never knew what my mother's take home pay was, she never knew his. My mother took care of the home, washed all of our clothes and cooked all of our meals while working a 9 to 5 just like my father. Is that ideal? Not for some but it worked for them.

I don't need to know what someone's take home pay is or what he spends his money on, but I do want to know HOW he manages... if his bills are paid, if he was a checking and/or savings account, if he has direct deposit or if he's waiting outside the check cashing spot until 12:01 a.m.

I've had my share of stingy brothas even a brotha or two who laid up unemployed while I toiled and he looked to me for damn near everything including hair cut money. I'm so glad for a mother who got in my butt for being young and dumb and I'm certainly glad for lessons learned.

"`Cause nothin' from nothin' leaves nothin'... You got to have somethin' if you wanna be with me... `Cause life is too serious, love's too mysterious.... A fly girl like me needs security"

If a man is going to be with me, he's going to have to spend some money on me. The thing is I'm a really simple woman. I like little things and I am financially sound so I'm not looking for someone to help me out of any bind, but as Mary sang in "Feel Like A Woman"....

"If you're on your way home, stop and buy me something, ohh.
Boy, buy me a bag.
Or buy me some shoes.
This is a part of me I'm tryna get you used to, ohh.
Boy, buy me diamonds.
Buy me pearls.
Buy me this.
Buy me that.
Make me fall deeper in love with you.
I'm tired of screaming independent.
I wanna start depending on you."

And it's not about being a gold digger, it's not about being taken care of, it's really about investing time and money into a relationship.

Telling The Truth... Love List Thursdays

A few years ago, I had the privilege and experience to hear Alice Walker speak here at the Library. She spoke of the upcoming The Color Purple play, the book as well as her other works and poetry. The entire audience was enthralled. My best girlfriend DC came down here for the event and when we bought 2 books, The Color Purple and Temple of My Familiar that she autographed. When we were in line to have our books autographed DC asked her "How is it that you're able to tell your truth without inhibition?". I was thinking the same thing because with ease and with grace, Alice Walker spoke of molestation, of physical abuse, abortion and her family dysfunctions... Ms. Walker replied to us and everyone around us, "Because it is much too painful to tell a lie".

It's not easy to tell the truth. It's not easy to bare your soul and I'm not speaking of telling the truth to a loved one or someone close yet that is difficult as well, I'm speaking of peeling the layers and seeing, telling, reveling in your own truth.

A friend of mine is dealing with a woman who felt comfortable enough with him to tell her truth. She told him her story to put her cards on the table, to make all things clear so that they could grow together. After she finished her story, he left her and ended their involvement. Her truth was much too much for him to withstand. However, those are the breaks for revealing your truth to others. They may accept it and love you anyhow or they may break out because... the truth is heavy, the truth is real, the truth is sometimes just too much to deal with.

For the individual... the same actually applies. The truth is sometimes too much and so we choose not to deal. We pull the cover up over our heads, we sweep the truth under the rug and hope that it disappears. But the truth is ever-present even if you close your eyes to it. Sometimes the truth is miserable. Sometimes just holding it in will make you ill. Sometimes by letting it out you will hurt someone's feelings. You will have to reposition your life and release some things. Please know that the truth will liberate you from some burdens.

You may be nervous, afraid, anxious, depressed. You may not be every woman. You may not be on top of the world. You may think you're great and wonderful but you hide it from others and negative self-talk yourself. You may be inspired, angry, loving or motivated but when you reveal your truth to yourself through your experiences, you give validity to them and find the ability to right the wrongs, correct your mistakes and seek successes for your downfalls.

My everyday quest is to live life to the fullest and to be true to myself....

LOVE

"And I don't want to be your other half, I believe that 1 and 1 make 2" -Alannis Morrisette, "Not The Doctor"

I reminiscence on the nineties when all of my friends were off getting married, getting pregnant and/or then getting married. We were young, early twenties, however me, D.C. and a few other friends steered clear of the trend... along with the fact that we didn't receive marriage proposals...

Well I had a sorta kinda marriage proposal. My ex's mother told me how the Lord showed her in dream that me and her son were married and so we should just go ahead on. I explained to her and her son that the Lord didn't reveal it to me. My answer was NO. It's not that I didn't love my ex but goodness, I wanted him to propose to me because he wanted to spend his life with me, not his Mama's false prophesying. We broke up months later and he married another woman 15 months after that.

I mentioned above that we steered clear of the trend and I say that because some of our friends married because they loved their significant others and wholeheartedly devoted themselves rather than following the pack. However a lot of them followed the pack, getting married because it was "the thing" to do and those marriages fell apart, including my ex's.

Marriage, while it is a societal norm - beneficial to society at large... a rite of passage if you will, It is not a decision that you jump into just because...

  • Your Mama told you to
  • All of your friends are doing it
  • You slipped up and now you're pregnant
  • You want the other person to change or stop nagging
  • You need somebody to help you pay off your bills
  • You're lonely
  • To justify your love

I see and respect marriage as an institution and the support it offers the community, especially Black marriages that endure centuries, marriages that may reach the edge yet they don't fall off because of straightforward devotion.

On the other hand... I don't know if marriage is for me... mostly because I have not met one man I would like to spend the rest of my life with. Now if you're a reader, then you know I'm in a committed relationship. So you may ask, K, how is that possible? Short answer... because we have problems that are not resolved and I do not know if I can accept them... ever.

And with that, I am beginning to post my Love List again. I first read this article in O Magazine back in February of this year and I started it initially, probably back in March (I haven't checked my archives) but I dropped it. I'm starting it again to document my true love desires. I vow to get to 100 this time. Here goes...
